Our bone density starts developing in the womb and continues throughout childhood. Essentially, a better nutritional start in life means our bones develop nicely. Throughout life, weight bearing exercise and movement stimulates our bone to form harder and stronger tissue. As we age, and especially as our hormones change, our hormones can seem to pull away the wool – so to speak and although our bones are constantly forming and reforming the hormones are just not pushing them to do it any more! So we lose some bone mass as we age. This means we need to pay special attention to our diet and lifestyle as we age as looking after our bone mass is very important. Its not too late to add to your bone mass but it will take a bit of work.
If we don’t look after our bone health we place ourselves at a higher risk for fractures. Just ask surgeons who repair bones and they will tell you that the difference between a brittle bone and a strong bone is very noticeable! We recommend females aged 45 plus and males age 55 plus get to know their bone health with a bone scan from their doctor and if the bone mass is low for your age, come and talk to us.
A Bone Clinic involves the following:
- 45 minute appointment ~ Learn about how diet, lifestyle and herbal remedies can help increase your bone mass
- 30 minute follow up ~ A follow up appointment is booked to discuss how the implementation of your diet and lifestyle changes are going.
Further follow up appointments can be made in order to further track your diet and lifestyle changes. All appointments involve a referral to a medical practitioner if necessary.
