The botanical name of Ginkgo biloba is suggestive of its double lobed shaped leaf which also resembles a cross section of the brain! The main known actions of Ginkgo are:

  • increases peripheral blood flow/tissue perfusion enhancing
  • circulatory stimulant
  • cognition enhancing
  • neuroprotective (6)
  • anti-PAF (anti-platelet activating factor) activity

Cognition – Ginkgo biloba leaf tablet showed good efficacy in promoting episodic memory function in mildly cognitive impairment patients (4). Other studies have shown improved cognitive flexibility without changes in brain activation, suggesting increased processing efficiency with EGb761® (8).

Attention disorders – Compared with placebo, more reduction was observed with Ginkgo biloba regarding ADHD-RS-IV parent rating inattention score as well as teacher rating inattention score (5).

Dementia –  A review showed that twenty two- to twenty four-week treatment with Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761® significantly improved Behaviour & Psychological Symptoms (except psychotic-like features) and caregiver distress caused by such symptoms. (1)

Schizophrenia –  Tardive dyskinesia, involuntary face movements often caused by psychiatric medications, symptoms were reduced with the concomitant use of Ginkgo biloba extract (2). A meta analysis in 2015 showed that Ginkgo biloba extract had a significant difference in ameliorating total and negative symptoms of chronic schizophrenia as an adjuvant therapy to antipsychotics (3).

Ginkgo appears to work mainly from its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions and no obvious improvements in memory or cognition were noted in studies on healthy individuals with no impairment in memory or cognition.

Our Ginkgo leaf is sourced from Canterbury grown Ginkgo trees. All of our teas are organic or wild harvested from natural surroundings. Enjoy!
