Pau d’arco bark is a traditional herb used for infections and tumuors in South America. Antimicrobial action has been shown against Staphlococcus aureus, including MRSA, Strepptococcus spp, Brucella spp, Helicobacter pylori, Clostridium paraputrifactum, Candida albicans, Trichophyton spp, HIV, HSV-1 & 2, polio, some influenza virus, Epstein barr and Rabies, Trypanosoma cruzi, Schistoma mansoni & Plasmodium falciparum. However Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli are not adversly affected by Pau d’arco extract (in vitro).
We mostly use Pau d’arco tea for gastrointestinal infections. It is also used as a complementary cancer therapy by integrative therapists.
