The Pregnancy Clinic is designed to support pregnant women and their wellbeing throughout the 3 trimesters. Our role is to support you in navigating issues from the first trimester through to the third trimester. We help you make nutritional choices during pregnancy to help provide you with the best outcomes for you and your family through this exciting, yet challenging time. The body requires up to 1/3 more nutrition during pregnancy, much of this we can get from food, however traditionally women have supplemented their diet with nutrient rich foods throughout pregnancy. Studies have shown that what we eat during pregnancy affects our babies development so we want you to know from the start what nutrients you should be getting and why and how to get those key nutrients such as Folate, Iodine, Iron, Choline, Omega 3 and the range of critical nutrients.

We advise you on a high quality supplementation to get you through pregnancy feeling great and supplying your body with the nutrients it needs to help grow a baby, and especially to navigate you through the first trimester when sickness and food aversions are often present.  We help you to find safe herbs to help reduce the morning sickness that often accompanies the first trimester. It is important to remember that not all herbs are safe during pregnancy and qualified expertise is required to choose safe and appropriate herbal remedies.

From the 2nd trimester where cravings and unhealthy eating habits can pop up we guide you to healthy options to help you choose the right foods if your cravings are strong as this can indicate a deficiency or a need. Often when we increase our nutrition, food cravings are eliminated. From the second trimester we also start to look at family history of both partners and what you can do to minimise risk of allergies plus to help feed your baby’s growing brain. At this stage it is easy to get anaemic or deficient in minerals if not supplementing so we advise on the correct supplementation and gut probiotics for your needs {Multi-micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy for prevention of maternal anaemia and adverse birth outcomes in a high-altitude area: a prospective cohort study in rural Tibet of China}. We also help you navigate yeast infections, and any other niggly issues.

From here we have a follow up at the beginning of the 3rd trimester in order to get you onto the right probiotics to help with successful breastfeeding, allergy prevention and to ensure that your gut flora are in the best place in preparation for baby’s birth. Studies have shown that certain probiotics help reduce Strep B infection preterm {https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27590374/}. We start you on a herbal programme to prepare the uterus for birth which research has shown lowers certain types of complications at birth {http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10754818}. We also help to navigate any issues you may be having with fluid retention & pre-eclampsia risk {https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4521300/} reflux or sleep that may be affecting your feelings of wellbeing. We also inform you about the what to do after birth if there are any complications with mum or baby and how to help heal stitches, cradle cap, nappy rash and more.

Without the education around food and eating we can easily feel that our body does not behave in the way we would like it especially with the extra hormones. Without proper nutrition high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels and other complications can occur throughout pregnancy many of which can be minimised or prevented with good nutrition. We believe that together with good antenatal care from your midwife & GP we can help prepare you for birth in a natural and meaningful way.
