Ribwort otherwise known as Plaintain or Narrow leaved Plantain is a common herb that grows wild and is often foundin grasslands. The herb is not well studied but has been mentioned in Pharmacopaea such as the German Comission E and been in use for centuries.
It is used mainly in the respiratory tract as a soothing demulcent with its mucilage content and Iridoids providing anti-inflammatory benefit to the mucosa. The Tannins are also useful in the digestive and urinary tracts astringing the tissues and helping with inflammation of these areas.
Extrenally it can be used as a compress on wounds to speed healng or as a mouthwash for mouth ulcers.
