Antacids have historically been the treatment of choice for heartburn caused by overeating, fatty foods or pregnancy because they offer instant relief. These products work by raising the pH level in the stomach. Unfortunately, this action effectively stops protein digestion by pepsin. Pepsin is responsible for breaking large proteins into smaller proteins which are then further broken down by the pancreatic enzymes in the small intestine meaning the long term use of antacids can hamper our digestion.

Sanderson’s Digestive FX compensates for this by providing a comprehensive blend of proteases, lipases and amylases that work over a broad pH range to support normal digestion as well as calcium carbonate which helps to neutralise acid fast. Over the counter antacids may also contain Aluminium hydroxide which the body needs to metabolise quickly as Aluminium is toxic to the body in high doses. We prefer people avoid the use of Aluminium hydroxide by using Calcium carbonate instead which breaks down into calcium for the body to use easily.
