Stress Hormone Testing

Stress Hormone testing is usually warranted where a person has experienced extreme stress levels over time. The type of testing needed depends on the symptoms.

A simple blood draw at SCL labs can determine the 8am cortisol level which is the most important indicator of adrenal fatigue and therefore indicates the risk of burn out, at a cost of around $30 to the lab directly. However sometimes knowing the pattern of cortisol throughout the day can reveal more information and in terms of chronic sleep issues – knowing the melatonin level can also indicate whether this hormone is responsible for the ongoing sleep difficulties.

We therefore recommend the following tests if either of these scenarios mean we want to know before we continue to treat, so that we can treat accordingly.

  • Adrenocortex Stress Profile – DHEAs (6-8am), Cortisol 6-8am, 12pm, 4pm, 8pm – taken by saliva sample at home – for symptoms of stress and fatigue
  • Cortisol Awakening Response – DHEAs, Cortisol (on waking), +30 minutes, +60 minutes, 12pm, 4pm, 8pm – taken by saliva sample at home – for symptoms of stress and fatigue
  • Melatonin Profile – 6-8am, 12pm, midnight – taken by saliva at home – for chronic sleep problems

Your signs and symptoms should warrant getting the test, and if it helps to formulate you a treatment plan much more specific to your needs, then we test.

Once testing is completed and results are received we will be in touch to discuss it at your follow up appointment. In the mean time the basics of diet change and addressing the underlying factors or most problematic symptoms has begun. The first phase of treatment can often be started and completed by the time hormone tests are returned and delivered.

You can choose based on your thoughts as discussed with your practitioner or by doing a cost/benefit ratio. What we do know is that there is nothing quite like testing to truly reveal what is going on inside the body, and to add motivation to your health journey. Testing can direct a treatment plan, alert you to red flags (and get sent to the doctor by us), or they rule out anomalies. However tests do cost money so we generally only recommend them when indicated and after discussion with you, about the pros and cons of each test.

Test take between 3 to 4 weeks to get returned. Saliva tests are taken at home and kits come with a full set of instructions.

Please note this test needs to be done in conjunction with a qualified practitioner and results are returned to a practitioner to be interpreted. We stock these on our website for Apothecary clients information and pricing only. If you have a practitioner and would like to order a test please send us the name and practice of your practitioner so we can fill in the form for them before you receive your test. Please also note we do not keep test kits in stock, any test ordered on your behalf will need to be ordered in and then sent. If you would like to order a test please book a 15 minute consultation with one of our practitioners so we can screen you for the test and book a follow up for your results.
